Epson are no strangers to the all-in-one printer market but their offerings have always been some what lacking in the built quality and value for money in terms of the cost of their printer ink cartridges. Epson seem to have had a bit of a rethink when it comes to the built quality on their latest model the Stylus SX400, it feels solid and well out together for a change. The cost of the Epson ink hasn’t change however, a set of Epson SX400 ink cartridges will set you back over £30, which is reasonable compared to other printers in this category but when you consider that a set of compatible inks for the SX400 cost £15 the genuine Epson cartridges seem a little over priced. On paper the SX400 looks like a very impressive device but this is not always the case as sometimes manufacturers can be quiet creative with the figures to put the printer into a better light. Take the Epson SX400 print speed for example, Epson claim it capable of 34pppm which is amazingly fast for an inkjet printer, but this figure relates to printing in draft quality where the print quality is barely readable and not suitable for any type of document. Increase the quality decreases speed considerable so in the real world the SX400 is not capable of 34ppm. This seems to be only thing Epson have exaggerated about as the rest of the SX400 functions are impressive, the print and scan quality are excellent and the scanner is fats too. The photo copier work without the need for a PC and strikes a good balance between the quality and speed necessary for a photo copier. First impressions of the SX400 are that it’s a good all rounder with a lot to offer and a reasonable price tag.
